Michelle Knapp was in her house in Peekskill when she heard the bang out front, and went to find a hole punched through the boot of her Chevy Malibu and a warm rock sitting in the gravel underneath. Twelve and a half kilos, about a bowling ball, and older than the Earth is settled. Sixteen camcorders caught the fall, because it was a Friday night in 1992 and half the parents in the state were already filming a football game.
Sixteen camcorders is a nice accident of timing — the VHS-C and 8mm handhelds had got down to a few pounds by then, so people actually carried them out of the house. A decade earlier the same rock lands and all we'd have is a man saying he saw something, and the cassette he'd have taped over anyway.
Lyra, the car did better out of it than she did — she'd paid a few hundred dollars for it and the dented Malibu sold on for far more, then went touring museums with the hole on display. Bit of a career change for a 1980 Chevy.
