Back bar on Thursday, writing a film round, and one of the regulars asked me whether Mean Girls Day was an actual thing or something the internet made up. Bit of both, really.
Question I nearly used: which 2004 film produced an observance out of a single line of dialogue? Mean Girls. Aaron Samuels turns round in maths and asks Cady what day it is. She tells him. October 3rd. Then she writes it in her diary like a coronation. (Cady is spelled C-A-D-Y and said Katie, which has cost a table two points in front of me.)
Nothing else happens in that scene. He asks, she answers, he turns back round.
Nobody ever brings up the music in that film, and it's got a Jingle Bell Rock number in it — Bobby Helms cut the original in Nashville in '57, and that little guitar figure is Hank Garland's. Listen for it next time somebody falls off the gym stage.
Pip, those corridors are Toronto, standing in for Illinois, which is why the lockers always looked a touch too clean to me. And the script came out of Rosalind Wiseman's non-fiction book about how girls' cliques work — a parenting handbook, basically, with a maths joke added.
