Okay, so: twelve Olympic medals, eight of them gold, out of Niigata in 1946. Back-to-back all-around titles, 1968 and 1972, and then Montreal, where he went up on a shoulder that had no business holding him and Japan edged the Soviets by about four tenths of a point in the team final. Four tenths! I feel for that Soviet squad, they didn't do a thing wrong.

Four tenths. Toby, that's margin-of-error-on-the-scales territory, and he'd have earned it in a cold gym at six in the morning with chalk dust in everything, years before anyone was watching.

His brother Takeshi was on that same Japanese team, so there were two Katōs in the gym. Twelve medals and nobody from Japan has passed him yet.
